I had no idea how popular this theme was on pinterest, until I really started working on adding to the .structures. board.

Sites I’ve been enjoying:

cabinporn.com

tinyhouseswoon.com

smallhousebliss.com

and all the boards on pinterest labeled “cabin porn.”

For years I’ve had a fascination with tiny houses and handmade houses.  The former for the eco-friendly aspect, the latter for the relation to handmade things in general. (small batch mfg, as we do now, is a natural evolution of pure handmade. Handmade, as a qualifier for clothing, is something I should discuss later.  I prefer not to call what we do handmade-  there can be a negative connotation of ‘unprofessional’ in the term handmade…)

When I was in northern washington state, I got to visit some Pocket Neighborhoods by the architect Ross Chapin.   The clever thing about a pocket neighborhood is that it takes the format of a city-  close, smaller houses, and inverts them to face onto a shared green space.

The idea of taking city type proportions and putting them in suburban or rural areas has an appeal.  While there’s an undeniable romance to an isolated cabin, most people still want to live most of the time in a community.
