It is very easy, when things are going well, to put in place reinforcements to keep things headed in the right direction, or better handle crises and stresses when they arrive. By reinforcements, I mean a series of positive behaviors and habits that seem, individually, too simple, but as a cumulative have significant impact.
When things are not going well, it’s all too easy to feel like any efforts towards personal centering would be for nought, and thus proceed to do nothing.
Yet, all the practical steps of reinforcement could have been taken at any time, even in the middle of misery or high discomfort- and they would have provided more sense of self.
I can see the threads between what I imagined for myself a year ago, and the structure of my life today. So I’m interested in proactively forming the future pattern.
What are the practical bits of reinforcement? No doubt it’s different for everyone, but the ones I use are very simple, and provide a sense of agency:
- deliberate + conscious food and consumption
- meditation of both types: mind and body
- speaking out loud to oneself in the mirror
- following a pre-defined rhythm, at least for part of the day
